Cyclists power up Ventoux three times in one day

Stuart Hall Cycling was involved in history in the making at the weekend with a fantastic first year for new sportive Ventoux3.

A team of fearless cyclists took on the challenge of a lifetime on Saturday, tackling all three sides of the infamous Mont Ventoux in France in just one day.

And all of those participants who took part to raise money for Parkinson’s UK completed the event.

Not only that but Game of Thrones actor Enzo Cilenti rode the route on a tandem with his father, who suffers from Parkinson’s.

Together they made history by becoming the first recorded cyclists to ride all three sides of the Ventoux on a tandem. They raised more than £10,000 for Parkinson’s UK, with donations flooding in from members of the public who have been inspired by their achievement.

The other participants who completed the challenge have added thousands of pounds more to that total.

Ventoux3 was set up as a new sportive this year by Parkinson’s UK and Stuart Hall Cycling.

Stuart Hall, director of Stuart Hall Cycling, says, “The event was a tremendous success and I’m really impressed by everyone who completed what was undeniably a very tough challenge.

“Participants not only had to tackle the steep climbs but also extremely high winds and temperatures that hit 28 degrees.

“It was all for a very good cause and it is great to be supporting Parkinson’s UK.”

The riders started at 7.15am from the Malaucène side and descended into Bédoin. They took a short break before starting the famous climb from Bédoin. By now it was about 28 degrees and the wind was getting worse. Most riders took about three hours to complete this climb, and most had to overcome cramp on the way up.

This made the descent into Sault very welcoming. Participants took on another short break before starting the longer but more gentle climb out of Sault to the summit. With the help of a tail wind most riders completed this side in around 2 hours 40 minutes.

Stuart adds, “It was a really great event and we have already had a lot of interest for next year. I want to congratulate everyone who completed Ventoux3 and thank them for making it such an enjoyable trip.”

Girl power triumphs in women-only sportive

Vercors1 Vercors2 Vercors3 Vercors4

Stuart Hall Cycling experienced true girl power this weekend.

Our five women who took part in the Vercors Pour Elles, the only women-only sportive in France, all powered to the finish with gold medal qualifying times for their category.

The tough event, on 30 May, covered 96km, with 1,800 meters of climbing, including the daunting Col d’Herbouilly.

Out of 123 starters, Sari Masoud came in 25th overall and 7th in her age category. She was closely followed by Alicia Bamford, who was 26th overall and 14th in her category. Lucy Bonham was 28th overall and 16th in her category, Lyndsey Thompson was 33rd overall and 8th in her category and Annaliese Lancaster was 43rd overall and 20th in her age category.

Stuart Hall, owner of Stuart Hall Cycling, says, “I am incredibly proud of all five of our very strong women. They deserve real praise for such top performances in what was a very tough event.”

1,000 cyclists join Stuart Hall Cycling in Mallorca

As our 2015 Spring Cycle Camp draws to a close, Stuart Hall Cycling is celebrating its most popular trip on record.

About 1,000 cyclists have joined us in Mallorca this year, enjoying the stunning conditions the country has to offer.

Stuart Hall, founder of Stuart Hall Cycling, says, “I am thrilled by the number of people who have come out to Mallorca with us to enjoy some great cycling and the company of friends old and new. It has been a lot of fun and we hope to see a lot of the same faces back again in the future.

“We have loved getting so much positive feedback from people who have enjoyed their holiday and we are determined our cycling camps will go from strength to strength.”

Our new fleet of 50 carbon hire bikes has been a particular success this year. And Andy Hilman, known to many as the Hilmanator, a masseur from a professional cycling team, has been a huge hit.

Among satisfied customers were Neil Wilson from Berwick Wheelers, who says, “The hotel, the staff and support we received during our stay was excellent, in fact it was superb.”

Zoe Todd praised the ride leaders, saying, “The routes they took us, cafes we stopped in and care they took to ensure our safety and enjoyment of the rides each day was great.”

Our next Mallorca cycling camp is in October, when it will held at the 4* Condesa de la Bahia in Port d’Alcudia.

Do you have the power to do the Ventoux3?

Have you ever considered trying to conquer one of the world’s toughest mountain climbs three times in just one day? Well now’s your chance!

Stuart Hall Cycling has teamed up with the charity Parkinson’s UK to launch a new sportive:  Ventoux3.

The challenge? To conquer not one, not two, but all three climbs up the legendary Mont Ventoux in France in one day – the ascents from Bédoin, Malaucène and Sault.

When? Saturday 20 June 2015.  Sign up.

Stuart Hall, explains, “We are looking for keen cyclists to sign up for this event with a strong masochistic streak! This isn’t for the faint hearted, and will be a huge challenge. You’ll need lungs like an air balloon and legs of steel. Let’s just say it will be tough, but one hell of an achievement!”

The gruelling triple ascent of the Giant of Provence will involve more climbing per distance cycled that any existing sportive event – more than 5km over the 120km ride.

Cyclists will battle extreme winds and scorching temperatures as they take on the notoriously inhospitable mountain, the scene of one of the most difficult climbs in the Tour de France. Mont Ventoux claimed the life of British cyclist Tom Simpson in 1967, when he collapsed half a mile from the summit.

Steve Ford, Parkinson’s UK Chief Executive, said: “At Parkinson’s UK, we’re used to organising lots of cycling events, but we’ve never been involved with anything on quite this scale before.

“Even Chris Froome only had to cycle up Mont Ventoux once – and we’re asking supporters to do it three times in one day.  That’s a seriously big undertaking, but we’ll be there to support our cyclists all the way.

“For people living with Parkinson’s, sometimes walking even the shortest distance can feel as exhausting and as daunting as climbing a mountain. So the money raised from Ventoux3 will support people for whom everyday feels like an equally big challenge”.

Cyclists will be asked to raise at least £250 for Parkinson’s UK.

Sign up. Hurry the deadline for entries is the end of April!

Stuart Hall Cycling Teams Up With Parkinson’s UK

Stuart Hall Cycling has formed a partnership with Parkinson’s UK.

For every cycling trip booked during 2015 a donation will go to the leading research and support charity.

Parkinson’s affects 127,000 people in the UK – which is around one in 500 of the population.

Stuart Hall, founder of Stuart Hall Cycling, said: “I have seen first hand the fantastic and important work that Parkinson’s UK does. It is a condition that affects so many people and this charity offers them support and carries out crucial research.

“We will be giving a small donation to the charity for everyone who makes a booking with us during 2015. I also want to encourage all Stuart Hall Cycling cyclists to think about giving the charity a donation themselves. It only takes a moment and could really help people who aren’t as fortunate as we are.

“We are able to spend hours in the saddle enjoying cycling in beautiful places such as Mallorca but for people with Parkinson’s it can be a struggle just to walk a few meters. Please do show your support.”

Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological condition, for which there currently is no cure. The main symptoms of the condition are tremor, slowness of movement and rigidity.

Rachel Backshall, head of business development at Parkinson’s UK said: “This new partnership with Stuart Hall Cycling is a huge privilege for Parkinson’s UK; to  be involved with a company with such outstanding levels of participation and commitment.

“Each and every person who makes a donation will be making a lasting change to lives of people affected by Parkinson’s and taking us closer to a cure. This new partnership is setting a benchmark in fundraising excellence and we are excited to see where this opportunity leads.”
